Managing Surgical Pain

Pain, or as I prefer to refer to it, discomfort associated with surgery, is a topic I can speak to directly. One year ago I had a bilateral knee replacement – both knees at the same time. I used hypnosis instead of pain meds to very successfully manage my discomfort throughout my recovery and rehab.
I was calm and relaxed the day of my surgery, and less than 12 hours after the surgery got out of bed and walked to the bathroom. I needed no leg braces or transfusion (comm on when having both knees done). 13 days later I could climb two flights of stairs with no discomfort at all.
Because pain signals come from the brain, you can learn to block or turn down those signals by shifting your focus to something else using self hypnosis. All it takes is a good technique and plenty of practice.
Surgical procedures are designed to improve your physical situation. Having the right frame of mind, and confidence in your ability to manage your thoughts and level of comfort, can improve your overall experience – helping you stay calm and relaxed, take less medication, and allow for a speedier recovery.
