I had a a great idea for a blog this week. Then Wednesday happened. Like many people, I sat glued to the television, flipping between 6 or 7 news stations. It’s taken me a couple of days to recoup from the many emotions that overwhelmed me. So today, I am going to talk about anger.
While anger is one of the most powerful and destructive emotions, it is good. If you’ve been listening for awhile you’ve heard me say this before: All emotions are good. They are your internal GPS that tells you that you have a need or want that is not being satisfied. You may think anger is bad because of the way some people behave when they are angry. To most, the behaviors that were witnessed at our Capitol were not the best way to deal with anger. Those behaviors actually make it worse because now people will focus on your angry actions, not upon your need.
So let’s talk for a moment about what anger is trying to tell you. Anger is your perception that something isn’t fair, and there is a desire within you to make it fair.
When you feel angry, the first thing you have to do is make sure that anger is what you are really feeling. Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, it is easy to misinterpret anger. Like all negative emotions, they can become habitual. When you consistently get what you want by expressing anger, it becomes a default emotion, but it may not be the real emotion you are feeling. Ask yourself if it is anger you feel, or is it frustration? Or are you really sad because you lost something or someone that was valuable to you? Both of these emotions indicate that the need is something other than unfairness. Because all emotions demonstrate a different need, they must be addressed accordingly in order for them to resolve.
You must also question if the anger is based in reality. Is this situation really unfair, or am I angry because I didn’t get what I want? Or am I over tired? Or am I hungry? I know that may sound silly, but the expression of being “hangry” has truth to it!
Here’s the bottom line. Maybe you feel you have lost control as this past year has piled on a lot of different stresses, evoking a myriad of emotions. Perhaps your old beliefs and methods of handling things are not working anymore.
