Myth Buster #12 – Hypnosis enable you to recall the exact details of a crime
While Hypnosis may certainly help elicit more details than your conscious mind could handle in the fervor of the moment, what you recall is still your perception of the event that happened. Most people in law enforcement will attest to eye witness testimony as being quite unreliable for the most part, because people’s individual perspective can cloud the details of an actual experience.
I’ll give you an example. I went on a white water rafting trip with my family. We were all on the same raft having the exact same experience, yet when retelling the story later to friends and family, each one of our stories varied in significant details. It was due to our own perspective. Many different personal factors come into play: fear, experience, age, confidence in swimming abilities, the macho factor. You get my point! So you might have thought by listening to our recounts of that trip that we were all on different rafts, perhaps on different rivers!
So in hypnosis, you might be able to recall more details of a crime or an event, especially if you were under stress or things were happening very quickly. However, if there were things that could be very subjective, such as a racial or gender bias, you may still account for things related to the incident in a way that is suitable to your own points of view. A trained forensic hypnotist will know how to take that into account during the hypnosis session.
