I can’t believe it’s taken so long to talk about pain -  the subject that sold ME on hypnosis. I had a bilateral full knee (both at the same time) replacement and took no pain meds - just used hypnosis to help with my recovery and had no pain. You may have language centers, auditory and visual centers i your brain, but there are no pain centers there. We ‘feel’ pain based on what our brain thinks it should feel like - from our experiences and what we’ve been told. You can reduce, eliminate, or change how you feel ‘pain’ before the nerve impulse reaches your brain. If you want to feel it like a tickle, or react to it through laughter, it’s up to you. With good instruction, hypnosis, and practice you CAN manage pain by turning down the volume or changing the perception of it. Hypnosis was very helpful in alleviating some of the symptoms for the clients I have seen with Fibromyalgia. Once again, we find stress as an underlying condition that made their symptoms worse. It was also effective in managing the pain that these clients experienced. There are many issues that these clients shared: the expectation of pain, the effects it had on their ability to work or function in everyday life, and the stress that came from worrying about all of this. As you all know, what we focus on expands, so giving these clients the tools to be able to shift their focus, calm their thoughts, and control their pain has gone a long way in helping them take back some control in their lives.
