The Destructive Power of Fear, Part 3

This is a three part series on the destructive power of fear. If you missed the first two segments, you can find them by clicking on the video blog tab at FAREHypnosis.com. They will be in the archives.

The icing on this destructive cake of fear is repetition. Fear lives in your subconscious mind and the easiest way to bake that fear is to do it repeatedly. While your conscious mind is easily bored by repetition, it is how your subconscious mind learns. And the more it hears or sees something, the more it gets baked into a belief. It becomes fact. And the more passionate you become about it, the quicker that happens.

So let’s review the points I discussed in these three episodes, and some ways to prevent negative results.

  • Suggestibility: Persuasive suggestions from people of influence can limit new ideas, and strengthen beliefs that don’t serve you well. Awareness of these influences and suggestions helps you question their validity and the importance of them in your life.
  • Fear: Letting fear take hold is the most powerful way you allow yourself to be manipulated. Ask yourself if there is indeed a real danger, or a logical reason to feel afraid. Many times your fear will not be based in reality.
  • Repetition: Experiencing the same thing over and over again, especially with a passionate persuasive suggestion, can become your truth. Seek out different people and experiences, shut off the 24-hour news cycle, mix up your daily routine, and challenge yourself by learning something new to gain a different perspective or understanding.

Often, the most destructive power of fear is that we don’t even realize that it is happening, or the effect it is having on our lives.

And as we have become more divided as a country, people are listening to and watching the same things, over and over again. A singularly closed and focused perspective, coupled with persuasive suggestions, allows fear to grow stronger. This creates a vicious cycle that deepens further with repetition.

It doesn’t matter which side you are on politically, religiously, or with any other topic. Become aware. Understand why you think and believe the things you do by allowing others to challenge them. Then, respectfully do the same for them.

I’m always amazed, as are my clients, by the beliefs they hold that weren’t theirs to begin with, but that were given to them through fear or persuasive suggestions. Challenging a belief and changing your mind has nothing to do with being wrong. It has everything to do with learning, then building your confidence and self-esteem based on your own beliefs, rather than those of others.

Learning to tame your fears, eliminate old beliefs that no longer serve you, and maintain a more open and positive perspective can be challenging at first. Hypnosis is an excellent tool to cut through the noise, and get to the real emotions that are driving your thoughts and behaviors.
