Empathy is a Good Thing

I’d like to challenge the idea that empathy is a good thing. Empathy means that you take on the feelings of others as your own. Typically empathy is present when someone is feeling bad, so taking that on as your own is detrimental to you. When you go down to that bad level you cannot help someone. You help by staying positive and assist them in rising to where you are. You can be compassionate without letting their emotions weigh on you.

Empathy, and even sympathy, are frames of mind that focus on the problem. Having compassion for someone or their situation is focusing on the solution. Compassion allows you to see that person or situation as what CAN be, sending a more positive energy that helps enable the person to move forward.
