Accidentally Unplugged

The other day I accidentally left home without my phone. Luckily it wasn’t a work day, so I spent the day without it. At first it felt odd – just knowing no one could reach me by phone, text or email. But soon, I forgot.
I found a radio station I hadn’t known about, then turned it off and rolled down my windows, felt the fresh air, smelled some fresh cut grass and listened to the noise around me. I noticed how comfortable it was to sit in my car. How good it felt to be able to get away from everything in my car.
I had no GPS and had to really pay attention to where I was going. I saw buildings I had never noticed before. I saw an eagle fly overhead.
I found myself completely engrossed in conversation and uninterrupted in my activities. There were moments when I felt as if I was doing some of these activities for the first time because I was so focused. I even found myself slightly annoyed when a friend checked the ding of a text message at dinner.
Interestingly enough, the thought of my phone never entered my mind until later that night when I heard it ring and had to look for where I left it. It was a very good day. I think I’m going to take a phone holiday every week and get back in touch with the real world that’s right outside my door.
