Thursday Thought: I Won’t Be One of Them

I’m Roberta Fernandez and it’s time for today’s Thursday Thought: I won’t be one of them. There’s an interesting thing going on Instagram, and I absolutely love it! The premise is pictures of the person posting saying I know a lot of people won’t like me or the way I look, but I won’t be one of them. And I think this is such a powerful powerful message to send to everybody out there.

The one that stood out to me was from @thebirdspapaya, for all you Instagrammers out there, and here’s what she wrote: I remember the days when every tiny thing someone would comment on I would adjust. The comments were constant. The way I spoke. The  way my body looks. The way I exercised. The way I dressed. How young or old I seemed. How annoying I was. How gross my stretch marks were to them. I felt like I couldn’t even breathe without being met by cruelty or criticism. Yet it felt familiar because I had been just as cruel to myself for most of my life. It would be easy to join them, to be constantly self-critical in a way that wasn’t constructive. Until you realize that you really can’t make everyone happy. So to wonder what it takes to make you happy and go after that share and joy is quite a move. I mean I’d rather be me, be weird, have fun, than be the shell of myself by what every other opinion would make me. In the sea of noise, to be quiet and listen to you is a gift. Let them laugh. Let them comment. Let them.  Let them.  Let them. Just don’t join them. We need you just as you are and as you’re becoming.

I can’t think of more appropriate message for you to think about this weekend.
