The latest issue parents and teachers are asking for help with is getting teens to unplug from their mobile devices. My answer is a question – What are you currently doing to model something else?
This is not just a teen issue. Adults have the same habits and I’ve noticed a trend in very small children being plugged in, too.The internet is an amazing tool that provides us with resources and information previously unavailable to many. It is a convenient tool to keep us busy while we are waiting somewhere. But we are beginning to realize the downside of being connected through devices rather than having human interactions and just ‘being’ in our environment.
Encourage your friends and family to engage in non-device behaviors. Host a game night. Take a bike ride or a walk outside and play an “I spy” game. Engage in a sport. Go to a museum. Color. Watch TV and during the commercials, try to stump those who were watching with questions about what you just saw – like what color was the main character’s shirt in the first scene?
The message here is to fully engage in doing anything that doesn’t involve screen time. You won’t miss anything – what’s on the internet stays on the internet.
