Hypnosis and Neuropathy

The efficacy of hypnosis for pain management is well-researched. Today I’d like to talk about neuropathy. There’s a lot of technical explanations as to why people experience this kind of pain, but I like to keep it simple, so here goes.

All sensations of pain originate in the brain. Yes, your brain. It feels like it’s in your hand or feet or some other body part, but in actuality, if and how you experience pain happens in your brain. With neuropathy, as with any injury, there are receptors in the part of your body that ‘hurts’ that send signals to your brain that there is a problem. For some reason, these signals are stuck. Like the needle on the old record album, it just keeps repeating itself over and over.

Hypnosis enables the brain to understand to know what the problem is and everything that can be done is being done. It then enables the brain to decide how to experience the message. It may decide to ignore it all together, it may decide to experience it in a more pleasant way, or it may decide to turn the sensation down so that it can be ignored.

Hypnosis doesn’t fix the damage to these nerves and receptors, but it can change how the brain responds in a way that allows you to take back control over your life.
