Today we’ll continue our conversation about feelings and emotions. It’s important in our basic understanding of them.
First we perceive something, usually through our senses. It goes into your subconscious mind and interacts with your beliefs and thoughts and rules that you have about life in general. Inside of your subconscious mind an emotion is formed, like anger, guilt, inadequacy, sadness, loneliness, or boredom. That emotion is not recognized by your conscious mind because your conscious mind has no capacity to access that.
So that emotion interacts with your unconscious mind, which controls your bodily processes. Your body produces a feeling. You can see there is a difference between an emotion and a feeling though we tend to use the words interchangeably.
The body creates a physical feeling so that our conscious mind can recognize the emotion. It might be tears, or heart palpitations, or break out in a sweat, or we get a funny feeling in our stomachs. Our body has all kinds of ways of expressing feelings, but sometimes it can confuse us by using the same bodily function, like tears for example, to express lots of different emotions.
So that’s a basic explanation so you can understand how your mind and body work together to let us know that something that is not being met, a need a desire or want.
Tune in next week to find out how these feelings can work for or against us.
