Last Saturday I was on a radio show – Channel 950 AM in the Twin Cities – Talking about Domestic Violence Awareness month.
Hypnosis plays a role in helping someone resolve emotions of the past and help them become more confident, with better self esteem. The subconscious mind retains our experiences from the womb and the emotions associated with them based on our perceptions of events at whatever age we are. EX: A 4 yr old believes in Santa and the lore that goes with him – literally – because a 4 yr old doesn’t have a logical conscious mind to figure out that it can’t be possible. Emotions at that time are typically misconstrued and misunderstood because a 4 yr old has no life perspective, context or knowledge. But firmly held beliefs are formed which may be triggered later in life and cause problems.
Women that I see who have been abused have had lifelong challenges with confidence, guilt, fear, sadness and anger. Even if they have come to terms and figured out as adults why mom, dad, husband, etc treated them so terribly, (aka they have dealt with it) that little one hasn’t figured it out, so the belief of old (of the 4 yrs old) is in conflict with the conscious belief of the adult.
Hypnosis helps their brains reorganize: Beliefs are like a house of cards; the first layer is built on misperceptions and the next layers are built on those mistaken beliefs. When the bottom card is pulled out, it collapses those old beliefs and emotions attached to them and the brain is force to reorganize. Change is permanent because you can’t ‘un-know’ what you now know!
