Myth buster #5 – I can’t be hypnotized. While there are small segments of people who cannot be hypnotized (those with very low IQ’s or diagnosed mental disorders like schizophrenia), the main reason you can’t be hypnotized is that you don’t want to be or have some fear about it.
Yes, this even means those control freaks out there! Control and strong wills have nothing to do with hypnosis. You are always in control when you are using the most powerful part of your mind -the subconscious. Being able to be hypnotized has everything to do with trust and desire: Do you trust your hypnotist and do you want to experience hypnosis?
I conducted a relaxation workshop in Plymouth a few months back and after the educational session and a demonstration with a volunteer, it was time for the group relaxation part. I taught everyone how to put themselves into trance, when they were ready, and just as we were getting ready to start, I asked for any last questions. A woman said she didn’t think she could be hypnotized because she always had to be in control. I explained a few more things, told her that whatever happened was ok, and we proceeded.
The participants held up a string with both hands in front of them and when they were ready to go into trance, their hands would simply fall into their laps. That woman was the first to go, but for 20 minutes, she let one arm drop and kept the other one straight out in front of her. It was her way of giving herself what she felt she needed and still allowing herself to have a wonderful experience. She was in control and in hypnosis!
