Myth buster #6 – I’ve never been hypnotized. Totally false and actually impossible. Here’s why:
In order to go from Beta (awake/ conscious) to Delta (sleep), you must pass through Alpha (light trance) and Theta (deep trance). So twice a day you are in hypnosis: when you fall asleep and when you wake up.
You also allow yourself to go into hypnosis during the day at other times. Have you ever driven from point A to point B and don’t remember how you got there? (Yes, Waconia mom, this is you!) Have you ever lost yourself completely in a book, movie or TV show to the point you lost track of time and your surroundings? Music, or sports, or cooking may be other people’s choice of trance. They are all examples of the Alpha state, when our conscious mind needs a break, and our subconscious mind takes over and keeps us functioning.
It used to be the belief that hypnosis was something that was done to you. We now know that it is something you do to yourself. And when you want to learn how to use hypnosis intentionally, you can find a great hypnotist to work with and they can teach you how to purposefully do it it on your own.
