I was reading a short interview with Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.
He pointed out that emotions don’t go away, in fact as we ignore them they can even grow stronger. His solution was to let them flow through you.
While I understand his premise behind this, let’s talk about the reason why emotions don’t go away: They serve a purpose. They are signals that we have a need or desire that isn’t being met and it needs to be satisfied. Letting it flow through doesn’t necessarily mean that you deal with it, so if the emotion isn’t satisfied, it will persist or continue to be triggered.
The 1,2,3 for emotions is:
– Identify the emotion (anger, sadness, inadequacy, boredom, etc)
2 – Determine the cause
3 – satisfy it – get what you need, get rid of or at least reduce the emotion!
